Brake pads: how to tell if you really need a full replacement
Brake jobs are one of the most commonly over-quoted repairs, mostly because “better safe than sorry” makes people reluctant to question the recommendation. A little context helps.
When a full replacement genuinely makes sense
If pad thickness is below the manufacturer’s minimum, if the rotor itself is scored or warped, or if you’re hearing consistent metal-on-metal grinding, replacement is the right call — delaying it is a genuine safety risk.
When it’s worth asking more questions
- Only one axle shows wear, but a “full set” replacement is quoted for all four wheels.
- Rotors are quoted for replacement without a measured thickness reading to justify it.
- A minor squeal is treated as an emergency full brake job rather than a pad-only fix.
Ask the workshop for the actual pad thickness measurement and rotor condition, in millimetres, before agreeing to a full job. A shop confident in its diagnosis will have no trouble sharing this.
