AC not cooling? What actually needs replacing (and what doesn’t)

A car AC blowing warm air is almost always diagnosed as “compressor failure” — but the compressor is actually one of the less common culprits. It’s also the most expensive part to replace, which is exactly why it’s worth double-checking.

Cheaper causes worth ruling out first

• Low refrigerant (gas leak) — often just needs a leak test and a refill, far cheaper than a compressor.
• Faulty condenser or cooling fan — restricted airflow can mimic compressor symptoms.
• Blocked cabin filter — reduces airflow and can feel like a cooling problem.
• Electrical fault (relay, fuse, sensor) — can stop the compressor clutch from engaging at all, without the compressor itself being faulty.

What to ask before approving a compressor replacement

Request the actual pressure gauge readings from the diagnosis, and ask whether a leak test was performed. A compressor that has genuinely seized or is making grinding noises does need replacing — but that should be demonstrable, not assumed.
